Falls of Lora
Already two months ago it was time to add a new place to my ‘been there-done that’ list. This time we went to the Falls of Lora in the nothern part of Scotland, UK. These famous UK waves form as the tide changes from high to low water and the outflowing water forms a wave in a narrow part of the loch. To start: The Falls of Lora run rarely and it’s hard to have the right timing here!
The boat took us from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Hull, England. We celebrated Caspers birthday here with some good pints and enjoyed the lottery which took place. The drive to Fort William was interesting with lots of different landscapes and very diverse mountains. I basicly studied all way long but it was still fun (and yes, passed the actual exam).
First day we arrived at the wave while it was forming and eager as we were we jumped in straight away. It took some time to form though and more then an hour later we could finally surf the wave we had come for all this way. Problem with this tidal wave is the short period of time you can surf it, but when it’s there it’s all good. Surrounded by some curious seals we paddled and enjoyed the wave.
Next day is best summarized by ‘frustration’. Due to some heavy wind the wave did not appear and after waiting for two hours in the water we decided to call it a day and head for some little fun creek, the Etive I would say ‘s name was. Back into the creekboat felt good, but could not make up for the wave where we had come for. Local dished and beer was the cure…
Conclusion: take your time if you go to Scotland and prepare for frustration and some epic kayaking! There are plenty of creeks and the Falls might work, but you are super dependent on the weather and all other ‘unknown’ factors. We’ll be back!
